Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong Holds Telephone Talks at Request with David Quarrey, the UK Prime Minister's International Affairs Adviser and Deputy National Security Adviser
2020/01/06

On January 6, 2020, Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong held telephone talks at request with David Quarrey, the UK Prime Minister’s International Affairs Adviser and Deputy National Security Adviser.

David Quarrey expressed, the UK side is very concerned about the escalating tensions between the United States (US) and Iran, and does not hope to see the further escalation in regional situation. Both the UK and China share common interests in safeguarding regional security and stability and easing tensions. The UK side hopes to enhance communication and coordination with the Chinese side in this regard.

Chen Xiaodong said, the US unilateral military adventurism violates Iraq’s sovereignty, territory and dignity, goes against international law and basic norms governing international relations and is illegal. Instead of solving problems, it only aggravates tensions and confrontation and impacts security and stability in the region and the world at large. The Chinese side urges the US side not to abuse force and return to the right track of resolution through dialogue and consultation as soon as possible. The Chinese side is willing to work with all concerned sides, including the UK side, to cool off tensions as soon as possible.

Both sides also exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue. Chen Xiaodong expressed, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is a significant result of multilateral diplomacy. Now that the situation gets grimmer, it is time for all the parties to the JCPOA to remain calm and rational and avoid taking actions that may complicate the situation.
