Foreign Ministry Spokesperson's Remarks on a UK Proposal for Increased Government Scrutiny over Foreign Takeovers and Asset Sales
2018/07/25

Q: Do you have any comment on a UK proposal for increased government scrutiny over foreign takeovers and asset sales if they pertain to issues of national security?

A: I announced yesterday that UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt will pay an official visit to China on July 30 and co-chair the 9th China-UK Strategic Dialogue with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. I also responded to a question about China's expectation for the strategic dialogue. I could repeat that for you.

Under the current international circumstances, it is imperative for China and the UK, both of whom are the permanent members of the Security Council, guardians of the international order and champions of the free trade, to send out positive and upbeat messages of upholding the rule-based international order, building an open world economy and opposing protectionism and unilateralism.

As to the individual case you mentioned, or the specific policies the UK may roll out, I would like to say that, we hope the UK side will put in perspective the normal commercial behaviors of enterprises, and create fair and equal environment for foreign businesses' investment and operation with the principle of mutual benefit, reciprocity and common development. We hope the UK will take concrete steps to promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation and oppose all forms of trade and investment protectionism.
