On February 16, 2017, Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Haixing held talks with visiting Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Alok Sharma of the UK in Beijing
Liu Haixing said that last September, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Theresa May at the G20 Hangzhou Summit, and they reconfirmed the general direction of the "Golden Era" of China-UK relations, playing a key role in the development of bilateral relations in 2017 and the next period. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between China and the UK. The two sides should further strengthen high-level exchanges, promote pragmatic cooperation in various fields, and enhance communication and coordination in international affairs, so as to promote a more stable and sound development of China-UK relations.
Speaking highly of UK-China relations, Alok Sharma said that the UK side attaches great importance to developing its relations with China and supports China's "Belt and Road" initiative. He expects to push bilateral relations for constant development by taking the 45th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between China and the UK as an opportunity.
