Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea (ROK)
2019/12/04

On December 4, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Seoul.

Wang Yi expressed, China and the ROK are important neighbors and cooperative partners to each other. Under the guidance of the leaders of the two countries, China-ROK relations have maintained the development momentum. Facing a global situation of intense uncertainty, the two sides should strengthen exchanges and coordination, enhance mutual understanding and support, safeguard shared legitimate rights and interests, and play a constructive role in regional peace and stability.

Wang Yi said, the Chinese side is ready to work with the ROK side in planning the important high-level exchanges of the next phase so as to constantly inject new vitality into bilateral relations. The Chinese side welcomes President Moon Jae-in's attendance at the 8th China-Japan-ROK Leaders' Meeting to be held in China, and is willing to work with the ROK and Japan to ensure a complete success of the meeting. Both China and the ROK are the world's important economies and have long been major trading partners to each other. The Chinese side is willing to dovetail the Belt and Road Initiative with the ROK side's development plans and actively explore third-party market cooperation. China will work with the ROK to work out the development plan 2021-2025 on China-ROK economic and trade cooperation as soon as possible, accelerate the negotiations of the second phase of the China-ROK free trade agreement, and upgrade trade cooperation. The two sides should carry out people-to-people and cultural exchanges in such areas as education, sports, localities and youth to cement the social public opinion foundation of bilateral friendship. The two countries should launch dialogue and cooperation mechanisms for maritime affairs and enrich bilateral strategic cooperative partnership.

Wang Yi pointed out, unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise at present. China and the ROK should strengthen communication and coordination on the multilateral stage, jointly safeguard the core status of the United Nations (UN), adhere to multilateralism, preserve free trade and devote to building an open world economy.

Kang Kyung-wha noted, amid the current complex and volatile international and regional situation, the ROK side attaches great importance to its relations and cooperation with China and supports multilateralism with the UN at its core. This year bears great significance for the ROK and China. Bilateral cooperation has yielded fruitful results. The ROK side stands ready to work with the Chinese side to plan high-level exchanges in the next phase, strengthen strategic communication, and deepen cooperation and exchanges in a wide range of areas including economy, trade, investment, culture, tourism and sports, in a bid to push the ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership to new highs. The ROK side highly values the ROK-China-Japan Leaders' Meeting, and will actively work with the Chinese side to ensure a success of the meeting.

Both sides also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula issue. Wang Yi stressed, the important consensus reached at the summit between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States in Singapore should be effectively implemented, and the DPRK side's legitimate concerns about security and development should be taken seriously and addressed.
