Wang Yi Meets with Former Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda of Japan
2019/10/26

On October 26, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with former Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda of Japan and Japanese principal representatives attending the 15th Beijing-Tokyo Forum.

Wang Yi said, currently China-Japan relations have seen steady improvement. Under the new circumstances, the two sides should join hands and take a longer-term and broader perspective to push for further development of bilateral relations. Leaders of the two countries reached important consensus on building China-Japan relations that fit the needs of the new era. The more we do to usher in a new era of China-Japan relations, the more we need to consolidate the foundation of our relations. In particular, we need to abide by the principles enshrined in the four political documents between China and Japan, honor our commitments, properly handle issues related to history and Taiwan and other sensitive issues, and avoid any disruption to or impact on our relations.

Wang Yi expressed, the relationship between the two peoples sees continuous improvement, and there is still a lot of room for improvement. The two sides should make good use of various mechanisms and platforms, including the Beijing-Tokyo Forum, further strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and enhance mutual understanding between the two peoples, in a bid to further improve the sentiments between the two peoples, and create favorable conditions and environment for the development of China-Japan relations and bilateral high-level exchanges.

Yasuo Fukuda said, the current sound situation of improvement and development of Japan-China relations has not come by easily and the two sides should make joint efforts to maintain it. The Japanese side should attach importance to historical and other political sensitive issues and properly handle them according to the consensus reached by both sides.
