Xi Jinping Meets with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan
2018/06/10

On June 10, 2018, President Xi Jinping met in Qingdao with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Afghanistan are traditional friendly neighboring countries, and both countries always understand, trust and support each other. To consolidate and develop China-Afghanistan traditional friendly relations is the unswerving policy of the Chinese government. Both countries should maintain high-level exchanges, intensify exchanges at all levels including government departments, legislative institutions, political parties and militaries, strengthen local cooperation, and deepen practical cooperation in economy and trade. China is willing to continue to provide assistance for Afghanistan’s economic and social development within China’s due capacity, and supports Afghanistan in participating in the “Belt and Road” construction and speeding up the realization of connectivity with countries in the region. Both sides should enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism and security. China will continue to firmly support the Afghan government’s efforts in safeguarding its domestic security. The two countries should advance people-to-people and cultural exchanges to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that the key to realizing the long-term stability and peace in Afghanistan lies in adhering to the "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned" political reconciliation process. I appreciate the peaceful initiative Mr. President has sent to the Taliban at the beginning of this year and the recent announcement of an interim ceasefire. China supports the Afghan government in advancing the reconciliation process and resolving the Afghan issue through political dialogue.

Mohammad Ashraf Ghani congratulated China on successfully hosting the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Qingdao Summit which has planned a bright vision for the development of the SCO. Afghanistan admires China’s economic and social development achievements, and thanks China for its long-term and great assistance to the country, and especially appreciates China's valuable support for the peaceful reconciliation process in Afghanistan. The Afghan side supports China’s “Belt and Road” initiative and the important proposals on enhancing regional cooperation, and is willing to deepen bilateral cooperation in all fields and local affairs.

Ding Xuexiang, Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and others attended the meeting.
