President Tabare Vazquez of Uruguay Meets with Wang Yi
2018/01/25

On January 24, 2018 local time, President Tabare Vazquez of Uruguay met at the presidential palace with Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Tabare Vazquez asked Wang Yi to convey his warm greetings to President Xi Jinping. Tabare Vazquez expressed that fruitful results have been achieved over the past 30 years since Uruguay and China have established diplomatic relations. At present, the relations between the two countries are at the best period in history and developing friendly and cooperative relations with China has become the political consensus that transcends parties in Uruguay. Uruguay has a strong will to promote the negotiation and signing of a free trade agreement and further deepen cooperation and exchanges in the fields such as economy, trade, people-to-people and cultural engagement and science and technology with China. Highly appreciating the “Belt and Road” initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, the Uruguayan side stands ready to give play to its own geographical advantages, and actively participate in the process of the joint construction, in a bid to become an important pivot of the “Belt and Road” facing the South Atlantic.

Wang Yi conveyed the greetings of President Xi Jinping to Tabare Vazquez and appreciated Tabare Vazquez for jointly establishing strategic partnership between the two countries with President Xi Jinping when he visited China in 2016, opening up a new prospect for bilateral relations. Wang Yi expressed that since the establishment of diplomatic relations 30 years ago, China-Uruguay relations have always maintained stable development, which owes not only to the broad and long-term view as well as the strategic guidance of leaders of the two countries, but also to the persistent mutual respect, equal treatment, mutual support, mutual benefit and win-win results between the two countries. China appreciates that Uruguay supports the “Belt and Road” initiative. It is believed that the participation of Uruguay will inject strong impetus into its own development. China is willing to, together with Uruguay, deepen economic and trade cooperation, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges and maintain communication on affairs concerning free trade agreement.

On the same day, Wang Yi also held talks with Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa of Uruguay, and they jointly attended the reception marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Uruguay.
