Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Heraldo Munoz of Chile
2018/01/22

On January 21, 2018 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Heraldo Munoz of Chile in Santiago.

Wang Yi expressed that China always regards Chile as a significant cooperative partner in Latin America and Asia-Pacific region. Under the personal care and vigorous promotion of President Xi Jinping and President Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria, China-Chile comprehensive strategic partnership has achieved substantial progress. China and Chile enjoy political mutual trust and friendship between the two peoples. China-Chile relations are mature and stable, remaining unchanged regardless of changes in the current political situation. China is willing to work with Chile to further intensify high-level contacts and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, enhance communication and coordination in international affairs, deepen practical cooperation under the "Belt and Road" framework, and constantly improve the level of bilateral trade and investment, so as to elevate bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership to a new stage. China and Chile have jointly created many "firsts" in China-Latin America relations, and it is believed that more "firsts" will be created in the future.

Wang Yi stressed that the Forum of China and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) is an important platform for developing countries and emerging market countries to carry out South-South cooperation. China is willing to make joint efforts with Chile to promote the upcoming Second Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum for a complete success, and send out positive signals of sticking to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, adhering to the course of multilateralism and the free trade system, maintaining the existing international orders and constantly exploring reform and improvement. Meanwhile, important consensus should be reached on deepening cooperation between China and Latin America and the Caribbean under the "Belt and Road" framework. The "Belt and Road" initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping has already become the most popular international public product in the world today. In history, China and Latin America had opened up the "Maritime Silk Road". Today, in the process of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" by various countries around the world, Latin America naturally should not be absent but become an important participant. Participating in the "Belt and Road" will create broader space, expand bigger markets and provide more resources and methods for the development of Latin American countries.

Heraldo Munoz expressed that Chile was the first South American country to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. It was also the first Latin American country to sign the Protocol on the Accession of China to the World Trade Organization and the bilateral free trade agreement with China. In recent years, the two heads of state have exchanged visits successfully. Bilateral cooperation in various fields has been increasingly deepened and bilateral relations have constantly made new progress. Under the circumstance that the world today is full of uncertainties and instabilities, Chile stands ready to, together with China, strengthen coordination and cooperation, jointly adhere to multilateralism and free trade, and cope with global challenges together including terrorism and climate change. The Chilean side welcomes and supports the "Belt and Road" initiative, and has taken an active part in the Belt and Road Forum for International cooperation hosted by China last year. The country is willing to further strengthen practical cooperation between the two countries in such fields as trade, investment, innovation, tourism, disaster reduction and prevention and infrastructure construction. As the host country of the Second Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, Chile stands ready to make joint efforts with China to push forward the meeting for a complete success. The Latin American countries are supposed to actively participate in the process of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", and Chile is willing to be a bridge linking China and Latin America.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
