Jointly Open up a New Era of China-Italy Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
2017/12/19

On December 18, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Angelino Alfano of Italy, who was in China for an official visit. Wang Yi and Angelino Alfano jointly attended and addressed the closing ceremony of 8th joint meeting of the China-Italy Governmental Committee.

Wang Yi said that Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano and I have exchanged in-depth views on bilateral relations and topics of mutual concern, and agreed to strive to open up a new era of China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership. Both sides have reached four important points of consensus in this regard:

First, we agree to co-build the "Belt and Road". Both sides should carry forward the spirit of the ancient Silk Road, and endow it with new epochal connotation. The two sides agreed to start friendly consultations at an early date and discuss and sign the inter-governmental cooperation documents on co-building the "Belt and Road", so as to further make cooperation planning and formulate cooperation list based on this. It is believed that Italy will certainly become an important bond connecting Asia, Europe and Africa.

Second, we agree to deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges. As two ancient civilizations, China and Italy should join hands to increase exchanges between the two peoples, deepen traditional friendship, advance communication and mutual learning between two civilizations, and jointly cope with global challenges, so as to make new contributions to the progress and prosperity of human civilization.

Third, we agree to deepen cooperation in innovation. Italy is a country with strong innovation capacity, while China has been advancing the strategy of innovation-driven development. Both sides could enhance the alignment of Made in China 2025 with Italy's Industry 4.0, as well as between China's "Internet Plus" and Italy's technological innovation plan, and intensify cooperation among small and medium-sized enterprises of both countries, so as to achieve common development.

Fourth, we agree to strengthen cooperation in international affairs. Both sides agreed that China and Italy should conform to the trend of globalization, stick to multilateralism process, and build an open world economy. Both countries will be jointly committed to building the country-to-country relations featuring mutual respect, fairness and justice, and win-win cooperation. On this basis, China is willing to make joint efforts with Italy to promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
