Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan
2017/02/17

On February 17, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met at request with Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan while attending the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting in Bonn, Germany.

Wang Yi said that 2017 and 2018 respectively mark the 45th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of the signing of China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship. Taking this as an opportunity to keep the intentions of predecessors of the two countries in mind, both sides should earnestly summarize the positive and negative experiences and lessons in the development of bilateral relations, and effectively safeguard the political foundation of bilateral relations, in a bid to bring bilateral relations back on the correct track.

Wang Yi stressed that there are now both opportunities and challenges for improving China-Japan relations. The successive negative moves recently adopted by Japan regarding major sensitive issues have caused disturbance to the improvement process of bilateral relations. Only when Japan lives up to its commitments, suits its action to the word, and effectively prevents the occurrence of incidents damaging the political foundation of China-Japan relations can there be real improvement in bilateral relations.

Fumio Kishida said that 2017 is an important year for Japan-China relations. In accordance with the concept of building a strategic relationship of mutual benefit between Japan and China, Japan is willing to properly handle differences, expand the positive side of bilateral relations, and well host the commemorative activities of the 45th anniversary of the normalization of Japan-China diplomatic relations so as to promote the improvement of Japan-China relations. The Japanese side attaches great importance to China's major concerns and reiterates its stance of not supporting "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan," and not supporting "Taiwan independence". This stance would not change.
