Fu Ying Visited BBC Television Centre

On 9 July 2007, Ambassador Fu Ying visited BBC Television Centre and held a conversation with BBC's Director-General Mark Thompson and Lornal Ball, head of BBC Chinese.

Mr. Thompson welcomed Fu Ying and indicated BBC has been attaching importance to China-related reports, for example, its Beijing Bureau was upgraded to East Asia regional headquarter for the purpose of further strengthening the coverage of China and striving to report China comprehensively from multiple perspectives.

Fu Ying expressed congratulations on the release of Alan Johnston, BBC Gaza correspondent, a few days ago. She said BBC is well-known in China, and BBC news is adopted by Chinese media frequently. She also talked about her experience of listening to BBC Special English every day when she was learning English during her early years.

Fu Ying pointed out that China has entered the stage of rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, the material wealth is becoming more and more abundant and people's lives got improved greatly, while the tough challenges of environmental problems and uneven development emerge at the same time. The Chinese government and people have full confidence in confronting the difficulties and problems. She hoped international media could report China comprehensively and objectively.

Mr. Thompson mentioned obvious changes have taken place to British media's coverage of China comparing with 10 years ago, i.e. from focusing on negative news to comprehensively and objectively report Chinese politics, economy and society. Mr. Thompson hoped more Chinese government officials will give interviews to foreign media, which is one of the best ways to elaborate on Chinese government's policies so as to promote foreign people's understanding and clear their mind of doubt and misunderstanding about China.

Fu Ying also presented China's policies and measures to prevent and control desertification. Mr. Thompson said, when Europe entered the stage of industrialization a century ago, people did not have the consciousness of environmental protection, it is an important progress in the history of human development that Chinese government formulated and executed the policy of laying equal stress on development and environmental protection to confront this kind of pressure in the initial stage of industrialization.

They also exchanged opinions on BBC's business cooperation with China and the exchange of Chinese and British new media.

Before the discussion, Fu Ying visited the news hall and studios of BBC Television Center accompanied by BBC's foreign editor Jon Williams and listened to explanation on BBC's institutions, staff and operation mode.
