Ambassador Liu Xiaoming Attends and Addresses the Celebration of the 2020 British Business Awards online
2020/11/01

On October 29, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming attended the ceremony of the 2020 British Business Awards held in Shanghai by British Chamber of Commerce in China online and delivered a speech. Around 250 guests joined the event on site or online, including Graham Stuart, UK Minister for Exports at the Department for International Trade, Caroline Wilson CMG, British Ambassador to China, Ray Chisnall, Chairman of the British Business Awards, Fang Wenjian, Chairman of China Chamber of Commerce in the UK (CCCUK), and representatives of both Chinese and British business communities.

On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, Ambassador Liu extended his warm congratulations to all the winners and expressed his heartfelt thanks to the British Chamber of Commerce in China for their hard work. He noted, in the past 12 years since its launch, the British Business Awards has witnessed the remarkable achievements of China-UK cooperation in trade and investment. It has become a symbol of the pioneering spirit and relentless efforts of the entrepreneurs of both countries. The special Chinese Investor in the UK Award has played a positive role in encouraging Chinese investment to the UK. By the end of 2019, direct Chinese investment to the UK reached 17.14 billion US dollars, increasing about twenty times in ten years. The UK has become the second largest destination for Chinese investment in Europe. “Today, the world is experiencing the most profound changes in a century, which are intertwined with the raging pandemic. Mankind is facing unprecedented challenges. It is my sincere hope that Chinese and British entrepreneurs will join hands to overcome the difficulties and write more splendid chapters of China-UK win-win cooperation,” said the Ambassador.

Minister Stuart said, the British Business Awards has witnessed the ever-growing development of UK-China economic and trade relations. An enhanced UK-China economic and trade cooperation will boost global economic recovery in the long run.

Ambassador Wilson noted that the Award has created a great opportunity to celebrate the successful partnership between the UK and China, and provided a platform for companies from different sectors as well as institutions and universities in the UK and China to share stories of cooperation and to showcase their innovative spirit.

CCCUK Chairman Fang Wenjian said, Chinese investment in the UK has increased by about 20 times over the past 10 years, creating many jobs locally. He was convinced that the trade and investment cooperation between China and the UK could generate huge opportunities in the post pandemic era.

The British Business Awards, founded in 2008 by the British Chamber of Commerce in China, aims to recognize companies and individuals that have made remarkable contribution to the trade, investment and commercial cooperation between China and the UK. More than a decade on, it has gradually become a major event of the Chinese and British business communities.

This year, the Award set out 10 awarding categories including Innovation Award. These awards went to 9 companies and institutions, including AstraZeneca China, and Penny Burgess, CEO of We Red Bridge Communications. Trip.com Group won the Chinese Investor in the UK Award.
