Ambassador Liu Xiaoming Attends China-UK Economic and Trade Forum and China Chamber of Commerce in the UK 2018 Gala Dinner

On January 18, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming was invited to attend the China-UK Economic and Trade Forum held by the China Chamber of Commerce in the UK (CCCUK) in the City of London and delivered a keynote speech entitled Embrace New Era, Open up New Prospects and Scale New heights. Charles Bowman, Lord Mayor of the City of London, Sun Yu, CCCUK Chairman, Michael Charlton, Chief Investment Officer of the UK Department for International Trade, Sir George Iacobescu CBE, Chairman of the Canary Wharf Group, David Sayer, Chairman of China Affairs KPMG LLP, Jeff Cao, Director of the Asia-Pacific region, London & Partners, Sir David Wright, former Vice Chairman of Barclays Capital, and Sir William Ehrman, the former British Ambassador to China, joined more than 200 people from the political, business and academic sectors in China and Britain at the event. This was followed by the 2018 CCCUK Gala Dinner later on in the evening, where Ambassador Liu attended with Madam Hu Pinghua and addressed more than 400 Chinese and British entrepreneurs.

Ambassador Liu said in his speech that at a time of great progress, tremendous transformation and profound adjustments in the world, China and the UK have embarked on a fast track in building the “Golden Era”. The two countries commemorated the 45th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial diplomatic ties in 2017 and saw steady and sound development of China-UK relations and fruitful results in the fields such as trade, nuclear power, transportation, finance and humanities. The year 2018 marks the opening year for the implementation of the blueprint of the 19th National Congress of CPC, the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up, and the fifth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. Both China and Britain should seize the three important opportunities arising from the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the new stage of reform and opening up and the Belt and Road Initiative to expand, elevate and deepen the mutually-beneficial cooperation between the two countries and jointly build the China-UK "Gold Era" 2.0. Ambassador Liu made three suggestions namely, to match development strategies, upgrade the result-based cooperation and enrich tripartite cooperation. These would, said the Ambassador, enable the two countries to increase policy coordination, pool their respective strength for common development, build brand names and create highlights, and deliver win-win results. The Ambassador expressed the hope that the business communities of the two countries should seize the valuable opportunities of this new era, get down to business, embrace new ideas, break new ground, deliver more "golden fruits” for China-UK “Golden Era", and scale new heights in China-UK economic and trade cooperation.
