Letter of the Embassy to Metro on issue of Tiger Conservation

Dear Editor,

I am writing to complain about the article "crunch time for the wild tiger" in Metro dated May 19th.

Mr. Graeme Green approached the Chinese Embassy in advance and we have tried our best to present hard facts and views.

Chinese conservationist Li Quan, who founded the courageous Save China's Tigers Foundation, has also sent him extensive answers on tiger conservation and put him in touch with relevant experts.

To our great disappointment, nothing is quoted from the Chinese side. China's efforts to protect the tiger through stringent law enforcement, public education and habitat management are not reflected in the article at all.

What is more, the accusation that the Chinese government supports or tolerates the trade in tiger parts is both groundless and untrue.

China is open to any constructive suggestions regarding tiger conservation and protection initiatives and will continue to work with the international community to protect the tiger.

We find it troubling that this article is by no means accurate, impartial nor balanced. Neither is it in line with the high standard of journalism we have come to expect from your newspaper, nor will it provide any practical solutions.

Yours Sincerely,

Liu Weimin

Counselor of Press and Public Diplomacy
