Q: On April 18th, a Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson expressed concerns about the recent arrests in Hong Kong. What is the comment of the Chinese side?

A: The police of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China arrested, in accordance with law, Jimmy Lai, Martin Lee, Albert Ho, Lee Cheuk-yan and other anti-China elements seeking to disrupt Hong Kong. However, a Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson made irresponsible remarks on April 18th in an attempt to voice support for the above elements. The Chinese side expresses grave concern over and strong opposition to such blatant interference in Hong Kong affairs.

Since the handover, Hong Kong has achieved remarkable success in implementing "One Country, Two Systems". The people of Hong Kong enjoy unprecedented democratic rights and freedom, and Hong Kong leads the world in rule-of-law rating. No one in Hong Kong is above the law. Anyone who violates the law must be brought to justice. The above-mentioned arrests were made in accordance with law on suspicion of organising and participating in unauthorised assemblies. These completely lawful and justified operations by the Hong Kong police brook no distortion, defaming or external interference.

Hong Kong has returned to China. It is a Special Administrative Region of China, whose affairs are purely China's domestic affairs which allow no interference by any foreign country in any form. China urges the UK to respect the lawful enforcement actions of the police of Hong Kong SAR, and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs, which are domestic affairs of China.
