Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang's Remarks on the Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Kiribati

On September 27 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi of China and President and Minister for Foreign Affairs Taneti Maamau of the Republic of Kiribati signed the Joint Communiqué on the Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Kiribati on behalf of the two governments in New York. The two sides have decided to resume diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level effective from the date of signature of the communiqué.

There is but one China in the world and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. These are basic facts and the universal consensus of the international community. The government of the Republic of Kiribati recognizes and undertakes to stay committed to the one-China principle, sever the so-called "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan authorities, and re-establish diplomatic ties with China. This is a correct political decision in keeping with the trend of the times and people's aspiration. China supports and appreciates this important decision made by Kiribati as a sovereign and independent country. It is further testament to the fact that the one-China principle meets the shared aspiration of the people and constitutes an irresistible trend of the times.

Currently the relations between China and Pacific island countries enjoy rapid development. The Chinese people and the Kiribati people have always cherished friendly sentiments towards each other. Resuming diplomatic relations and enhancing cooperation with China is the shared expectation of all sectors in Kiribati. It also serves the fundamental and long-term interests of our two countries and peoples.

China stands ready to, on the basis of the one-China principle and five principles of peaceful coexistence, enhance practical cooperation and friendly exchanges in various sectors with Kiribati to benefit our two countries and peoples.
