Minister Ma Hui Attends 2019 China Yangzhou City Roadshow

On July 18, 2019, Minister Ma Hui of the Chinese Embassy attended 2019 China Yangzhou City Promotion and Overseas (London) Capital Matchmaking Symposium and delivered a speech. Xia Xinmin, Mayor of Yangzhou City, Xiao Liang, Deputy General Manager of Bank of China London Branch, Lise Bertelsen, Executive Director of China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), and more than 60 representatives of the British business community, including London Stock Exchange, Miller Insurance and Deutsche Bank, were present.

Minister Ma said that Yangzhou is a famous historic and cultural city and a vibrant hub in China’s Yangtze River Economic Belt. He welcomed the delegation from Yangzhou Municipal People’s Government to London and its symposium on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. He noted the steady development of China-UK relations and added, “With deepening exchanges and cooperation between Yangzhou and the UK, the two sides have expanded consensus and increased common interests. This creates new opportunities for win-win cooperation”. Both Yangzhou and the UK are believers of open cooperation, promoters of science, technology and innovation, and representatives of profound history and splendid culture. The two sides have bright prospects and great potential for cooperation. He hoped that the cooperation between Yangzhou and the UK would become deeper and more substantial and yield more fruitful results.

Mayor Xia said that Yangzhou is a city on the Great Canal with rich cultural heritage, convenient transportation and eco-friendly environment. In recent years, Yangzhou has been deepening its strategic cooperation with domestic and foreign investment institutions, promoting the in-depth integration of financial resources and industrial development, and building good eco-system for the financial industry. The city has a total financial asset of $100 billion. Yangzhou is building a financial agglomeration and advanced manufacturing clusters, fostering mass entrepreneurship and innovation. The Mayor hoped that the British business community would seize this opportunity to get to know and invest in Yangzhou, and carry out extensive cooperation with Yangzhou to achieve common development.

Bertelsen said that the UK and China have strong economic complementarities and broad prospects for cooperation. The 10th UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue held recently has achieved 69 results. In the first quarter of this year, the volume of UK-China trade and British exports to China have grown rapidly and the cooperation between the enterprises of the two countries face new opportunities. The CBBC is willing to play an active role as a bridge between the UK and Yangzhou companies to promote a win-win situation.

At the Symposium, the Yangzhou Municipal People’s Government signed cooperation agreements with China Chamber of Commerce in the UK (CCCUK) and Bank of China London Branch respectively, and Yangzhou Education Investment Group, Cambridgeshire Innovation Centre and Bank of China Jiangsu Branch signed a tripartite agreement.
