Madame Hu Pinghua Attends First Thai-inspired Orchids Festival at Kew Gardens

On 26 February 2018, Madame Hu Pinghua, wife of Chinese Ambassador Liu Xiaoming, attended the reception of Thai-inspired Orchids Festival held at Kew Gardens. Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Princess of Thailand, travelled to the UK especially for this event.

Madame Hu had a cordial talk with Princess Sirindhorn. She said that the late King Bhumibol was an old friend of the Chinese people, who had made remarkable contribution to the friendship between China and Thailand. The Chinese people would remember him forever.

Princess Sirindhorn thanked Madame Hu in Chinese for attending the event. She said that her family and China enjoy deep friendship, and she had visited China many times. This year, she has planned four visits to China, of which the most important will be the trip to Beijing for the celebration of the 120th anniversary of Peking University as an alumnus. Madame Hu wished her a successful visit and expressed her hope that Princess Sirindhorn would visit China often.

First opened in 1759, Kew Gardens, as a part of British Royal Botanic Garden, has an area of 121 hectares and 50,000 species of plants, accounting for one-eighth of the plant species known to mankind. Kew Gardens which is home to over 14,000 rare species is known as the "British Museum" of plants. Kew was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.

The Thai-inspired Orchids Festival this year is the 23rd annual Orchids Festival held by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Besides the exhibition of a variety of Thai orchids, the event also offered food tasting, and song and dance performances. Over 100 wives of ambassadors and diplomats attended the event.
